Dive Insight:
Costco’s updates to its Uber and DoorDash partnerships come just a few months after President and CEO Ron Vachris underscored the wholesaler’s stateside success with the same-day delivery.
Costco’s U.S. same-day delivery business is “growing at an even faster rate than our digital business overall,” Vachris told investors in May during an earnings call, adding that delivery is a strong loyalty driver and is commonly utilized by its highest-spending members.
Costco’s work with Uber commenced in 2021 with a delivery pilot in 25 locations across Texas. In 2024, Uber announced it was expanding its partnership with Costco in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Japan, but did not specify which or how many locations the expansion covered in those countries.
Today, nearly all Costco’s U.S. stores are available on Uber Eats, providing shoppers the option to order on demand and scheduled delivery. As part of the U.S. expansion with Costco, Uber is offering additional benefits, including Uber One membership savings, discounted Uber gift cards and a limited-time offering to purchase a Costco membership directly through Uber Eats, according to the press release. Uber One members can now also get Uber fees waived on eligible grocery and retail orders totaling more than $60.
Prior to Thursday’s announcement, DoorDash and Uber’s partnership in the U.S. existed only in Puerto Rico. Now, Costco is adding its full nationwide store fleet to DoorDash’s marketplace, encompassing nearly 630 locations across 47 states and Washington, D.C., a spokesperson for DoorDash confirmed with Grocery Dive.
Like on Uber, customers will have access to same-day and scheduled delivery from Costco via DoorDash’s marketplace, the spokesperson noted.
Instacart has long been the go-to for Costco e-commerce in the U.S., with their partnership dating back to 2017. In January, Costco and Instacart expanded their partnership to Europe, launching the retailer’s first same-day delivery websites in France and Spain. Late last month, Instacart announced that Costco custom cakes and party platters were now available for delivery through its marketplace.
