Aldi US has entered New York City’s Midtown neighborhood with a store on West 42nd Street near Times Square.
A location in Times Square is a statement, and it comes as Aldi continues its ambitious U.S. growth plans, including the goal of opening more than 180 new stores by the end of this year alone.
At 25,000 square feet, the location packs in the classic Aldi offerings. Nearly 90% of the products on its shelves are private brands, and each week, shoppers can discover Aldi Finds’ seasonal and on-trend products that range from unique foods to pet accessories, according to a press release.
Aldi offers full aisles of prepackaged meat as well as produce — both of which unsurprisingly feature signage highlighting low prices. “Impressively high quality at incredibly low prices,” reads one sign in the produce section.

Nonperishables also take center stage in the Midtown store, from cookies to ice cream cones to oatmeal. The new store also made room for an aisle stocked with household essentials like cleaning products.

When Aldi announced plans for this store last August, it highlighted how its small footprint allows for more convenient shopping trips in a heavily trafficked area.
The storefront is located at 311 W. 42nd St., inside The Ellery, a luxury rental residential building with connected high-rises, putting Aldi in close proximity to residents as well as tourists around Times Square.
“At our Midtown store, New Yorkers will see why so many already choose ALDI for their weekly grocery trip,” Chris Daniels, a regional vice president at Aldi, said in a statement in May. “As shoppers look to stretch their dollar further, we can’t wait to open this new location in one of the most iconic parts of the city and offer the high-quality grocery selection people want and need at the lowest possible prices.

To celebrate entering the heart of New York City, Aldi pulled out all the stops to highlight its brand identity.
Building on its reputation of offering trendy merch, Aldi offered exclusive, limited-edition tote bags at the store. The store’s first 200 customers received a gift bag filled with a sampling of Aldi products as well as a gift card.

Aldi also partnered with Uber Eats for some opening-day fun in Times Square. The While the store on the edge of Times Square is likely to become the most noticeable Aldi in the Big Apple, it is not the discounter’s only location in the city.

The Midtown storefront marks Aldi’s second Manhattan location, and the discounter has stores in each of New York City’s other four boroughs.
