Dive Insight:
Amazon’s first-ever “Free Groceries for a Year” sweepstakes is the latest effort by the company to further entice shoppers, specifically its Prime members, to view the company as a go-to grocery shopping destination.
Prime members are automatically entered into the sweepstakes when they make a qualifying online grocery purchase of at least $15 across Amazon’s grocery channels, including same-day delivery, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh and Amazon Now. Purchases from local retailers available on Amazon’s online marketplace are also eligible.
Customers with an Amazon account can also manually enter the sweepstakes by signing up for text alerts or daily on Amazon’s online marketplace, with no purchase or Prime membership required, Amazon noted.
Amazon will announce winners weekly leading up to Prime Day, which kicks off on June 23. The sweepstakes consists of three separate drawings — one per week — each with its own entry period and set of winners. Non-winning entries will roll over into the next drawing, Amazon noted in the official rules on its website, and people can submit additional entries during each new drawing period.
Prime Day, which includes a slew of grocery deals, will start after the sweepstakes concludes and will run until June 26.
Grocery deals during Prime Day include offering Prime members fresh produce, meat and deli items for $3 or less, with some items as low as $1. Amazon noted in an email that many items that are part of this offering are “summer grilling and summertime favorites” such as sweet corn, hot dogs, hamburgers and hot dog buns.
A few deals started Tuesday and will run until June 26, including 40% off Amazon’s grocery delivery subscription and a 90-day trial option of the grocery delivery membership for eligible government assistance-verified subscribers.
