Aldi went on a store opening spree late last week, debuting 16 new locations across eight states in one day, the discounter posted on LinkedIn.
The openings, which happened on Nov. 20, occurred mainly in states along the East Coast where Aldi already has an existing footprint. The discounter opened eight stores in Florida, two in Pennsylvania, and one each in Illinois, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
“ALDI continues to gain momentum as we plan to operate nearly 3,200 stores by 2028,” an Aldi spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Grocery Dive. “This milestone is an exciting marker of our growth, but it won’t be our last!”
Aldi has opened over 180 stores over the past year, according to a Grocery Dive analysis. Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania have welcomed the most new locations.
In addition to organic growth, Aldi’s expansion strategy incorporates strategic acquisitions, most notably its current work to convert 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores, which it acquired from Southeastern Grocers, into Aldi locations.
Of the new locations that opened last week in Florida, five were former Winn-Dixie stores and one was a former Winn-Dixie Liquor location.
