Grocers are turning up the heat on savings with the rapid approach of Memorial Day weekend and summer.
Seasonal deals are a tried-and-true way grocers work to build customer loyalty, and as consumer price sensitivity remains prevalent, Memorial Day and the upcoming summer months present an opportunity for grocers to underscore that they offer the value their shoppers crave.
Kroger’s Memorial Day savings deal centers on backyard grilling and private label. The grocer is offering a bundle that feeds 16 people at $3.50 a head and includes barbeque staples like burger patties, buns, cheese, baked beans and potato chips and more, with some of the items carrying the grocer’s name brand.
This isn’t the first time Kroger has leaned on grilling to construct the ideal summer value package. Last summer, Kroger created a grilling bundle for the Fourth of July that provided shoppers with all the essentials for an Independence Day barbeque for $4 a person.
On Thursday, Natural Grocers kicked off a Memorial Day savings initiative that’s running through Sunday with price reductions on staple summer-event food items like hot dogs, sandwich breads, potato chips, grilling rub and sparkling water, according to the press release.
Members of the grocer’s {N}power loyalty program have access to additional offers during the same time period on items such as ground beef, condiments and smoked bacon as well as 10% off alcohol purchases at select stores. Meal bundles are also up for grabs for these customers, including a Burger Meal Deal available until the end of September that feeds a party of four for under $14 total.
Natural Grocers’ decision to offer extra discounts to its loyalty program members underscores how the specialty grocer continues to lean into its membership program to drive more value.
Last week, Target announced it is looking to “make the most of every summer moment” with the launch of 10,000 new products between May and August that include groceries, beauty products and home goods. Food and beverage items part of the launch ahead of Father’s Day include pre-seasoned burgers and sparkling water under the Good & Gather brand; new ice cream flavors like tart cherry blast and peach cobbler; and seasonal snacks including chili lime popcorn and honey mustard pretzel twists under the Favorite Day line.
The retailer is also introducing “Hello Summer Saturdays” every Saturday in June at all of its stores. The initiative includes giveaways for Target Circle members and weekly limited-time Target Circle offers on goods like Favorite Day foods and summer toys and clothing.
Target also has a summer food display dubbed “The Boardwalk Shop,” which will serve as a “destination featuring seasonal treats,” according to the announcement.
