Weis Markets hadn’t opened a new store in three years — that is, until last week.
Last Thursday, the Mid-Atlantic grocer debuted a 65,000-square-foot store in Linganore, Maryland, marking the first location the chain has added since 2022, when it opened two stores.
The debut of Weis’ latest location follows delays in its store-development efforts stemming from labor shortages and supply chain bottlenecks.
In May 2024, Weis announced it would begin construction on six new stores with plans to open them throughout 2025, noting it had scaled back on store openings due to “significant labor and supply chain disruptions.” The Lake Linganore location is the first to open since the grocer made these plans public.
However, a year later, the grocer said in its latest annual report that while labor and supply chain conditions had stabilized, disruptions persist, leading to “multiple store development and construction projects” being pushed from a 2025 to a 2026 completion date.
The store that opened last week, which marks Weis’ 50th store in Maryland, features full-service meat and seafood departments, sushi prepared daily in-store, a heat-and-serve meal section and a Starbucks kiosk, according to a press release. The store also has a drive-thru pharmacy and a six-pump fuel center.
Lake Linganore store shoppers have access to Weis’ “Low, Low Price” program, which offers low prices on over 10,000 everyday goods, as well as the grocer’s weekly “Hot Buys” program. Shoppers can also redeem and use their rewards points, and place pickup and delivery orders with Weis through DoorDash, Instacart, Shipt, Uber Eats and Amazon.
Last year, Weis renovated or remodeled a dozen locations, up from four remodels in 2023, and ended the year with a store count of 198. The grocer also acquired a pair of Pennsylvania supermarkets from Sunnyway Foods with the intention of rebranding the stores under the Weis banner.
This year, Weis announced it began construction on an upcoming 64,000-square-foot Middletown, Delaware, store that will include fresh departments, a pharmacy, grocery staples and a fuel center. As of February, the store is slated to open during the fourth quarter of this year.
