Dive Brief:
- Walmart announced Wednesday that its holiday meal deal this year can feed 10 people for $35 and includes 18% more items than its holiday bundle last year.
- This year’s offering has 26 items, including a frozen 10- to 16-pound Butterball turkey priced at 97 cents per pound, and private label items that provide classic Thanksgiving sides and pumpkin pie ingredients.
- Walmart said its deal is the “lowest priced one-click basket in the program’s history.” That focus on affordability comes as other discounters and supermarket chains are also touting low-priced holiday deals.
Dive Insight:
Walmart has laid out a Thanksgiving meal deal that’s priced competitively with what the many grocery chains it competes against are offering.
Ninety-six percent of the items included in the deal have temporary price rollbacks, including four of the five national brand items.
This offering also includes more items than last year’s. New additions this year include Jiffy corn muffin mix, whipped topping for pumpkin pie and ingredients for sweet potato casserole. Walmart said that the basket also costs 12% less than those same items did last year.
Walmart noted in the announcement that customers can find recipes for popular meals and side dishes in its Recipe Hub. The Thanksgiving meal, which is available in stores and online through Dec. 24, can be purchased online in a one-click shoppable basket. Walmart is also offering free Express Delivery on the meal basket through Nov. 30.
Several grocers have so far announced Thanksgiving deals under $40, with supermarket chains including Wegmans and Schnuck Markets offering bundles that are competitive on price with discounters’ offers.
