Wakefern Food Corp. has agreed to acquire three ShopRite stores in Pennsylvania from the member families that own and run them, according to the East Coast grocery cooperative.
The stores, located in Philadelphia and West Chester, Pennsylvania, will become part of ShopRite Supermarkets, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wakefern that currently owns and operates 31 supermarkets in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Wakefern spokesperson Maureen Gillespie said in an emailed statement. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The Colligas and Miller families, which currently own two of the stores that Wakefern is buying — West Chester ShopRite and Whitman Plaza ShopRite in Philadelphia — are exiting the business through their deals with the co-op, Wakefern said. The McMenamin family, which currently owns the third store, located on Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia, will continue to operate another store in the city as well as one in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, that it recently bought from the Miller family.
Sean McMenamin, who became chairman of Wakefern in 2023, is president of his family’s grocery company, McMenamin Family Markets.
Wakefern’s pending acquisition of the three ShopRite locations follows other moves it has made in recent years to purchase grocery stores and brands.
Last fall, Wakefern bought Morton Williams, a chain of 17 stores in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the New York City boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan. Wakefern operates the stores through a wholly owned subsidiary.
In late 2024, Wakefern acquired specialty food brand Di Bruno Bros. Also that year, Brown’s Super Stores, a family-owned company that runs ShopRite stores in the Philadelphia area, began operating stores under the Di Bruno Bros. banner.
Wakefern encompasses about 400 stores in nine states under banners that include Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market, in addition to Morton Williams, ShopRite and Di Bruno Bros. The co-op generated $20.7 billion in retail sales during its most recent fiscal year, up 3.1% from the previous year.
