United Natural Foods buys Tony's Fine Foods

Dive Brief:

  • United Natural Food Inc. has purchased fellow specialty foods distributor Tony's Fine Foods for $195.3 million.
  • The deal combines two distinctly different companies. Tony's specializes in deli meats, cheeses, and Italian cookies. United Natural specializes in natural and organic products.
  • United Natural said Tony's will operate as a separate division. United Natural has another unit -- Alfred's Organics produce, which also runs on a stand-alone basis. 

Dive Insight:

United Natural's CEO said the deal is part of his company's efforts to acquire a string of specialty products. Certainly Tony's, with its penchant for importing cheeses and crackers and such, fits that bill.
