Dive Brief:
- Black widows have been found on grapes at supermarkets in states including Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
- The venomous spiders have come as a surprise to quite a few customers washing grapes at home or examining them in the store.
- Aldi even went so far as to pull all grapes from shelves at Milwaukee-area stores following a sighting at a Wauwatosa, Wis., location earlier this month.
Dive Insight:
It actually isn't that uncommon to find black widows among grapes. Vineyards are a favorite spot for the hour-glass-bearing arachnids to build their webs. Their bites, however, can be especially fatal to small children and the elderly, and this news is likely to cause some concern among consumers who might have been startled by reports of Brazilian wandering spiders on bananas in the U.K.
