Dive Brief:
- Starbucks unveiled its new 264,000-square-foot factory for the company's Evolution Fresh juice brand.
- The coffee giant spent $70 million to build the juice facility -- more than double the $30 million it spent to buy the juice brand in 2011.
- The new facility, located in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., plans to source most ingredients for the juices from within a 200-mile radius.
Dive Insight:
The growth of Evolution Fresh has been quite extraordinary. Just last year you could only get the stuff in about 2,000 Starbucks outlets. And most of those were on the West Coast. But it started popping up in Starbucks stores in New York and elsewhere in recent months. And in August the brand made its debut at Whole Foods stores. By the end of the year, the brand will be available at more than 8,000 Whole Foods locations and Starbucks outlets around the country. With growth like that, the new factory looks like a necessity. And that $30 million to buy the brand a few years ago looks like money well spent.
