Dive Brief:
- SpartanNash kicked off 2026 by opening the first small-format location under its Hispanic grocery banner Supermercado Nuestra Familia, the company announced Tuesday.
- The nearly 14,000-square-foot location in Omaha, Nebraska, “is strategically situated near community schools and directly on a bus route, offering families convenient access for quick shopping trips before or after school and work,” the press release noted.
- The new location is the sixth under the banner, which has doubled its number of stores in less than a year.
Dive Insight:
While the location is smaller than typical grocery stores, the new Supermercado Nuestra Familia carries a range of grocery essentials, SpartanNash said.
The store features bakery, produce, meat and dairy items, plus center store staples such as traditional spices, a full-service carnicería and an assortment of hot foods in the deli. Customers can also find aguas frescas and horchata that’s prepared daily, as well as fresh-cut produce.
“At nearly 14,000 square feet, this store is designed for speed and convenience, while still offering the authentic products and flavors that feel like home for so many in the community,” SpartanNash Chief Retail Officer Djouma Barry wrote in a LinkedIn post earlier this week. “It’s a format built for today’s families and is a great example of how we continue to evolve to meet our guests where they are.”
Located at 2323 L St., the store is the banner’s fifth in Omaha. SpartanNash debuted its first Supermercado Nuestra Familia outside Nebraska last summer with the opening of a store in Topeka, Kansas. The new 14,000-square-foot store is more than a third smaller than the approximately 50,000-square-foot Topeka location.
SpartanNash has ramped up its expansion of the Supermercado Nuestra Familia banner, which it has operated since 2013. Last year, the company opened the banner’s fourth in Omaha — a converted Family Fare. During its earnings call in May, CEO Tony Sarsam said that the company is “looking to be more aggressive” with opening stores in Omaha.
Retail sales have fueled positive results for SpartanNash. The company recorded its sixth consecutive quarter of retail sales growth during its second quarter of fiscal 2025, which ended July 12, 2025 — its last earnings release before it was acquired by C&S Wholesale Grocers. That quarter also marked the third consecutive quarter that its wholesale sales declined.
