Dive Brief:
- Save A Lot opened its second location in the Save A Lot y Mas format in St. Louis on Wednesday, according to an emailed announcement.
- The new Save A Lot y Mas store features fresh Hispanic produce, specialty meats and bakery items “designed to deliver both cultural relevance and everyday value,” the discounter said in its announcement.
- The store comes about a year after the first Save A Lot y Mas debuted in Overland, Missouri, which is part of the greater St. Louis area. Both stores are operated by Leevers Supermarkets, which also runs Ahorra Mucho — another Hispanic-focused store — in Aurora, Colorado, in partnership with Save A Lot.
Dive Insight:
In recent years, Save A Lot has ramped up its efforts to court Hispanic shoppers.
In addition to opening stores under the new Hispanic formats, Save A Lot recently launched a Hispanic private label brand called La Tierra de Sabores that combines new items with products previously sold under two former store brands.
Save A Lot said the newly opened store incorporates lessons learned from the Ahorra Mucho format, which debuted in 2024. The grocery company noted that the new store features ready-to-cook marinated options, an enhanced produce selection, fresh-baked goods from local bakeries and a curated meat selection with popular cuts. It also has advertising tailored to Spanish-speaking shoppers as well as in-store signage and digital promotions written in Spanish.
“Seeing the Save A Lot y Mas footprint expand into more St. Louis-area neighborhoods continues to demonstrate our commitment to delivering quality, culturally meaningful grocery experiences at affordable prices,” Save A Lot CEO Bill Mayo said in a statement. “We are continually working to meet the needs of today’s shopper and this enhanced product offering and store format show that we are listening and meeting customer needs and preferences.”
Along with the three Hispanic-focused stores, Leevers Supermarkets also operates Save A Lot-branded stores throughout Colorado, Missouri, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Save A Lot has approximately 650 stores in 29 states.
