Meijer opened three supercenters in Northeast Ohio on Thursday, bringing the retailer’s store count in the Midwestern state to 58.
The new stores, located in the communities of Austintown, Medina and Richmond Heights, each span 159,000 square feet. All of the new supercenters include a broad grocery assortment as well as a pharmacy; baby, pet and clothing departments; and a health and beauty care section. Shoppers who visit the Austintown store can also buy gas at an adjacent Meijer Express fuel station that opened last month.
The store in Medina sits on the site of a former Kmart store that closed in 2012, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.
Meijer also opened three stores in a single day in May 2024, when the retailer debuted supercenters in North Canton and Alliance, Ohio, as well as Hillsdale, Michigan.
In addition to its signature supercenters, Meijer operates six smaller-format neighborhood markets, including a 40,000-square-foot store in Cleveland that opened in 2023 and was the first store in the concept to debut outside of Meijer’s home state of Michigan. The latest store in the group, known as Independence Market, opened on April 30 in Clarkston, Michigan.
The retailer also runs stores under its convenience-focused Meijer Grocery banner, a fleet of medium-sized stores between 75,000 and 90,000 square feet. The chain debuted in 2023 with stores in Orion Township and Macomb Township, Michigan. A third Meijer Grocery store opened in Noblesville, Indiana, last July.
Meijer operates more than 500 locations in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky.
