Dive Insight:
After debuting its first two Meijer Grocery stores in its home state of Michigan in early 2023, Meijer brought the supermarket format to Indiana in mid-2024.
In the year and a half since then, Meijer has announced more supercenters and opened Independence Market in Clarkston, Michigan — its sixth neighborhood market store. The mass retailer, though, has stayed quiet on its plans for the Meijer Grocery format, which aims to provide customers with grocery essentials in a store footprint that is significantly smaller than its 150,000- to 250,000-square-foot supercenters.
“Designed for convenience, the streamlined format makes it easy for customers to quickly find the fresh food and other essentials they need at the lowest prices every day,” Maureen Mitchell, vice president of the East Michigan region for Meijer, said about Meijer Grocery.
Meijer Grocery locations include fresh produce and grocery staples as well as bakery, meat, seafood and deli departments, flowers, cards, a full-service pharmacy, health and beauty care, and pet supplies. The upcoming store will also offer Meijer’s Shop & Scan mobile payment tool along with delivery, pickup and loyalty program savings.
Meijer said it plans to “open additional locations in the future” for Meijer Grocery, without providing more details. Construction on a Meijer Grocery in Fishers, Indiana, is underway, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported at the end of 2025.
Meijer operates more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations throughout the Midwest. The Rochester Hills store will mark Meijer’s 128th store in its home state. Meijer plans to open two supercenters — one in Brownsburg, Indiana, and another in Bainbridge Township, Ohio — on the same day it opens its fourth Meijer Grocery.
