Lidl US will offer a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people for $36 during the coming weeks — 20% less than it charged for an almost identical promotion a year ago — the discount grocery chain announced Wednesday.
The promotion encompasses 21 items, including a 14-pound Shady Brook Farms turkey and French’s french fried onion rings as well as 3 pounds of yellow onions, 5 pounds of russet potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and pie crust dough. Most of the products in the bundle carry Lidl’s own brand.
The holiday deal will go into effect on Nov. 5 and extend through Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving. All of the items covered by the promotion will be sold individually, allowing shoppers to purchase only the foods they want, Lidl said.
Notably, Lidl has lowered the price of the turkey to 25 cents per pound, more than a third less than in 2024, when the discounter offered turkeys for 39 cents per pound as part of a $45 Thanksgiving special that was also designed to feed 10 people. Shoppers need to use Lidl’s app to take advantage of the discount.
The German retailer, which opened its first stateside locations in 2017, said the cost of the deal represents the lowest amount it has ever charged for a comparable assortment of Thanksgiving-oriented foods.
The grocery chain pointed to grocery inflation as a reason why it elected to bring down the cost of its Thanksgiving promotion this year. “With grocery prices continuing to be a challenge for families, we understand how vital great value is this holiday season,” Lidl US CEO Joel Rampoldt said in a statement.
Grocery prices rose at a 2.7% annual rate in September, the same pace of grocery inflation recorded during the prior month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week. The figure reflects the fastest rate of grocery inflation since August 2024, when the metric came in at a multiyear low of less than 1%.
Lidl’s $3.60-per-person Thanksgiving promotion is competing with rival discounter Aldi’s holiday offering, which includes a turkey and the ingredients for nine sides for $40. Like Lidl, Aldi is charging less for its Thanksgiving deal this year than it did in 2024, when the chain offered enough food to feed 10 people for $47.
Correction: The subhead on a previous version of this story misstated the amount Lidl is charging for its Thanksgiving meal promotion. The deal costs $36 and is intended to feed 10 people.
