Dive Brief:
- H-E-B debuted a new supermarket in suburban Dallas on Wednesday, adding to its presence in a metropolitan area where it has expanded rapidly during the past few years.
- H-E-B broke ground on the 133,000-square-foot store, in Prosper, Texas, in April 2024.
- The new location is the ninth store the retailer has opened under its namesake brand in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since it first brought its flagship banner to the region — where rival supermarket operators including Kroger and Albertsons also have a sizable presence — in 2022.
Dive Insight:
The new store, about 35 miles north of Dallas, includes a two-story True Texas BBQ restaurant, an expansive curbside parking zone for pickup customers, a drive-up pharmacy, and a fuel station with a carwash. H-E-B also offers live cooking demonstrations and handmade sushi at the store.
H-E-B revealed in January that it had purchased a nearly 10-acre site in the Dallas city limits and is considering opening its first store in the city on the property, but has not indicated when that location might open. H-E-B has also announced plans to add six other stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
H-E-B disclosed in 2021 that it would finally open stores under its mainstream supermarket brand in the Dallas-Fort Worth area the following year — two decades after it opened its first locations in the region under its upscale Central Market specialty banner. Six of the 10 Central Market stores H-E-B operates are in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
H-E-B opened its first namesake location in Fort Worth in March 2024.
The retailer has also opened two stores under its Joe V’s Smart Shop banner in the Dallas-Fort Worth area over the past two years. The majority of the locations in the 12-store discount grocery format are located in and around Houston.
