Dive Brief:
- "Fed Up," a documentary film that blames the food industry for a large part of America's obesity problem, premiers today in select cities across the nation.
- The movie, produced by Katie Couric and one of the producers of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," has generated considerable buzz since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.
- The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is campaigning against the film, which it calls "shortsighted, confrontational and misleading."
Dive Insight:
It seems that the movie shows no sympathy to anyone associated with the industry, finding fault with even Michelle Obama's widely praised Let's Move! campaign. And although the food industry has mainly stayed mute following exposing documentaries in the past, the GMA's offensive response may be a telling sign as to how much impact the documentary is having already.
"Fed Up" also seems to be the latest bit of evidence that, as noted before, Americans are increasingly dividing into a sort of Red state, Blue state country in regard to food.
