Four months after announcing same-day perishables delivery, Amazon shared Wednesday that it’s grown the service to its intended goal of 2,300 markets and is seeing success, with customers who add fresh groceries to same-day delivery orders shopping twice as often as those who don’t.
The grocery e-commerce service initially launched in areas of Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and New York City. Through its latest expansion, Amazon has brought the offering to areas of Boise, Idaho; Salt Lake City; Fort Collins, Colorado; Omaha, Nebraska; Sugar Land, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; Kennesaw, Georgia; Gaithersburg, Maryland; and more, according to the press release.
In regions where the same-day perishable delivery service is available, Amazon said fresh groceries now make up nine of the 10 most-ordered items, with fruits including bananas, avocados and strawberries topping the list.
“We’re seeing customers combine their fresh grocery orders with their regular Amazon purchases, like electronics, gifts, clothes, and household essentials, in ways that make their lives easier and save them valuable time,” Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said in a statement.
Since the August launch, Amazon has grown its fresh grocery selection available for same-day delivery by 30% and added customer favorites from Whole Foods Market, per the press release. The company also noted strong momentum in its newest private brand, Amazon Grocery, which offers a wide selection of items priced under $5. Some of the most popular Amazon Grocery items purchased for same-day delivery include a gallon of whole milk and an 18-count carton of cage-free large white eggs, the announcement noted.
Amazon’s latest announcement also noted its Freshness Guarantee, which offers shoppers a refund on items that don’t meet their expectations, is now available with the service. Thousands of Amazon’s grocery items display its “Freshness Guarantee” badge online, Amazon noted.
Amazon said it plans to continue expanding its same-day perishable grocery service in 2026.
