Amazon has long been a significant player in the grocery industry — and 2025 is shaping up to be one of the company’s most eventful years in the food retailing sector since it acquired Whole Foods Market nearly a decade ago.
While the e-commerce giant still runs Whole Foods as a distinct unit, the company has taken key steps this year to more closely integrate the specialty retailer with the rest of its grocery operations. In January, Amazon announced that Whole Foods CEO Jason Buechel would also take control of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go chains, a move that followed the departure of its former head of worldwide grocery operations last November.
Come June, Amazon revealed that it had revamped its grocery leadership team, tapping several Whole Foods executives in a move that suggested it was looking to the chain’s expertise to help strengthen other aspects of its grocery business. Last month, Amazon said it would bring Whole Foods’ corporate staff under its central structure by the end of 2026, furthering its efforts to bring its grocery business together.
Amazon has also worked throughout 2025 to raise the profile of its 5-year-old traditional grocery chain, Amazon Fresh, in part by ramping up its efforts to attract shoppers with lower prices.
And in what could be its most impactful move in grocery during the year, Amazon announced last month that it had expanded its same-day perishable foods delivery service to more than 1,000 cities and towns and plans to sharply expand that service in the coming months.
Here’s a look at some of Amazon’s biggest moves in the grocery sector so far in 2025.
