In the wake of the proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger, which was first unveiled in late 2022 and fell apart at the end of 2024, grocers large and small have announced plans to combine, often in an effort to scale, enter new markets or offload specific assets.
Shaking off the ghost of the failed Albertsons deal, Kroger announced in July plans to acquire regional grocer Giant Eagle for nearly $1.7 billion.
But this is far from the only M&A action grocery has seen in 2026. Since the start of this year, many smaller players have joined forces to gain a competitive advantage. For example, regional grocer Harps Food Stores entered Tennessee and Kentucky through its acquisition of 18 stores from the owners of independent grocer Dyer Foods, while Ridley’s Family Markets, which operates stores across the Intermountain West, bought six-store chain Terrels Markets in Utah.
Below is a list of grocery M&A starting from 2026. We’ll update this list as new deals emerge, so check back often. And if you have grocery M&A news to share, you can reach us here.
