Dive Brief:
- Northgate González Market announced last week it is transforming a store in La Habra, California, to its Mercado González format.
- The grocer noted in a LinkedIn post that the store’s revamp into an immersive, foodservice-focused shopping destination will be complete by this fall.
- Three years after debuting its Mercado format in Costa Mesa, California, Northgate González Market is expanding the format by revamping one of its longest-standing neighborhood markets.
Dive Insight:
Under the new format, the Mercado González in La Habra will house nearly a dozen authentic puestos — or food stalls — such as Taquería Los Mesquites, Tamalería, Aguas Frescas and more. Two of the 11 food stalls — Pastelería La González and Tortillería La González — have already opened, Northgate González Market confirmed.
The location will also include El Moro Churrería, an “iconic Mexico City churrería” serving churros and hot chocolate, as well as an indoor bar and Artesanías & Dulcería, which will sell authentic Mexican artisan crafts, gifts and traditional sweets, per the press release.
“For decades, our La Habra store has proudly served generations of families while supporting community partners… Now we’re creating something even more special, a place where people can gather, discover regional flavors, celebrate our traditions, and experience the warmth and hospitality that define Mexico,” Oscar González, Northgate González Market’s co-president, said in a statement.
Northgate González Market, a family-owned and operated company, currently runs 46 stores across Southern California.
