Employees at a United Natural Foods, Inc. warehouse in Pompano Beach, Florida, have ratified a five-year contract with the grocery distributor, according to an announcement from the Teamsters, the union that represents the workers.
The deal, which covers over 200 workers, includes wage increases and stronger benefits along with what the union described as “strong workplace protections.” It is the first Teamsters contract governing working conditions at the facility, the union said.
Workers at the Pompano Beach warehouse will see their pay rise by 31% during the contract period. They will also gain access to the union’s health care plan and the Teamsters Western Conference Pension Plan. The contract also includes just cause protections as well as strong grievance and arbitration procedures.
The Pompano Beach workers recently voted unanimously to authorize a strike if they were not able to reach an agreement with UNFI that addressed what the union said were unfair labor practices at the facility.
The Teamsters have organized over 3,500 UNFI workers since 2022 and now represent more than 5,500 of the company’s workers.
In March, UNFI said it plans to close a distribution center in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, later this year as part of an effort to optimize its network and serve customers more efficiently.
UNFI’s agreement to raise pay for the workers in Pompano Beach comes as the company works to improve its financial performance. The company’s net sales were off by 2.6% during the second quarter of fiscal 2026, and it reduced expectations for the full year. The company believes it will be able to return to growth in 2027, CFO and President Matteo Tarditi said during an earnings call in March.
