As rising interest in GLP-1s and other nutrition trends impact consumers’ buying habits, Meijer is looking to cater its private label assortment to specific dietary needs.
The retailer said Thursday that more than 120 of its exclusive products have at least 5 grams of fiber per serving, including 20 under its True Goodness by Meijer brand. Meijer added that more than 700 of its private label items have at least 10 grams of protein per serving, including 300 under its Fresh from Meijer brand and 250 under its name brand.
Meijer said it plans to add more protein-packed private label goods this year, including sesame protein pasta salad under its Frederik’s by Meijer line, protein puff snacks under its name brand and grass-fed and finished double smoked beef sticks under True Goodness by Meijer.
In the announcement, Meijer also highlighted specific product recommendations from its dietitians, including its name-brand whole wheat pasta and True Goodness organic black beans.
“It’s important to us at Meijer that we are offering our shoppers options that help them meet their health goals and are accessible on a budget, and that’s exactly what these products are designed to do,” Meijer Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer Don Sanderson said in the announcement.
Meijer’s announcement follows other recent efforts by grocers to pack their assortments with nutritionally trendy items. Last September, Kroger launched a protein-focused extension of its Simple Truth line while Sprouts Farmers Market unveiled Wellness Bowls, a high-protein and high-fiber grab-and-go meal option in its foodservice section. Earlier in April, Associated Wholesale Grocers added two specialty private brands: Wellwerks, which features functional snacks and other food products, and Nüwerks, which spans vitamins, protein powders and other nutraceuticals.
These efforts follow the release by the USDA of newly updated dietary guidelines advising Americans to prioritize protein and stay away from highly processed packaged foods.
