Dive Brief:
- Albertsons and Chevron U.S.A. have started allowing shoppers to combine fuel rewards earned through both companies’ loyalty programs for savings at gas stations carrying Chevron’s brands.
- Under an arrangement the grocer and the fuel company announced Wednesday, shoppers who link their Albertsons and Chevron Texaco loyalty accounts can apply rewards from both programs toward a single purchase at participating Chevron and Texaco stations.
- The integration builds on a relationship the grocer started with Chevron back in 2012, when Chevron and Texaco stations in California began offering gas discounts to Vons and Pavilions shoppers.
Dive Insight:
The new program lets Albertsons shoppers score bigger fuel discounts by using points they earn from grocery purchases in combination with rewards they accrue through the Chevron Texaco Rewards program.
At Chevron and Texaco stations outside California and Hawai’i, members of the grocer’s loyalty program can save up to $1 per gallon by redeeming Albertsons for U points in addition to as much as 50 cents per gallon through Chevron’s program, for up to $1.50 per gallon in total savings. In those two states, savings through Albertsons’ program are capped at 20 cents per gallon, but customers can still save as much as 50 cents per gallon through Chevron Texaco Rewards for up to 70 cents off per gallon in total savings.
Customers can use the savings they are eligible for through Albertsons’ rewards program toward a maximum of 25 gallons of gas for one vehicle per transaction. Under the program, every 100 points are worth 10 cents off per gallon.
Albertsons noted that while shoppers can redeem fuel rewards they earn through grocery purchases at Chevron and Texaco gas stations, they cannot use rewards from Chevron Texaco Rewards at Safeway fuel stations. In addition, gas rewards are unavailable in the Jewel-Osco market area, which spans Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
Albertsons and Chevron were both sponsors of the Albertsons Boise Open golf tournament, which took place earlier in August at a country club in the grocer’s hometown of Boise, Idaho.
Last year, Albertsons added a benefit to its loyalty program that allows members to save on travel expenses. Under that arrangement, shoppers can receive rebates of up to 5% of what they pay for hotel stays, activities, packages and ground transportation, and 1% of the cost of airfare. Customers in the retailer’s paid loyalty tier, FreshPass, earn cash back through the program at twice those rates.
